How to find and merge duplicate contacts on iPhone
· by Davyd Hruts

On iOS 16 and later, open the Contacts app: if iOS has found duplicates, a Duplicates Found card sits at the top of the list, and View Duplicates, Merge All joins them. It catches cards with the same name. Cards for one person saved under different names, a nickname and a full name, need a check by phone number, which is what Sweepr's Contacts does.
The built-in way
- Open the Contacts app, or the Contacts tab in Phone.
- If iOS has found duplicates, tap Duplicates Found at the top of the list.
- Tap a name to review and merge it, or Merge All to merge every match.
If there is no such card, iOS did not find cards with matching names. That does not mean there are no duplicates.
Why duplicates appear
- The same person saved twice: once as "Mum", once with a full name.
- Several accounts synced at once: iCloud, Google, Exchange, each with its own copy.
- A number saved from a messenger or a call log as a new card.
- An old phone's contacts imported on top of iCloud's.
Check which accounts your contacts come from
In Contacts, tap Lists (or Groups on older iOS). If the same people appear under iCloud and Gmail, the duplicates are two accounts, not two cards, and the fix is to keep one account on: Settings, Apps, Contacts, Accounts.
Empty and broken cards
Cards with a name and no number or email build up over years: a typo, a half-saved number, a company with a website only. They are not duplicates, so iOS never flags them, and they make search slower to use. Review them one by one rather than in bulk: a card with only a name may be the only place a birthday or a note is kept.
Questions
Does merging contacts delete anything?
In iOS, merging links the cards into one and keeps their details. In Sweepr, the merged card holds every number and email, and the old cards wait 30 days in the Contacts Trash.
Why does iPhone not show Duplicates Found?
Because it found no cards with matching names. Duplicates saved under different names need a check by phone number.
Will merging on iPhone change contacts on my Mac?
Yes, if both use iCloud Contacts. The change syncs to every device on the same account.
