The first hard drive weighed about a ton and held one photo

The first commercial hard drive was the IBM 350 Disk Storage Unit, part of the IBM 305 RAMAC computer from 1956. It stacked fifty 24 inch platters in a cabinet the size of two refrigerators, weighed over a ton with its air compressor, and stored 5 million characters, about 3.75 MB. That is roughly the size of one photo from a current iPhone.

What the IBM 350 was
Before 1956, business data lived on punched cards and magnetic tape, which had to be read in order. The IBM 350 let a computer jump to any record on a spinning disk in under a second. The first unit went to Zellerbach Paper in San Francisco, which used it to keep track of orders and stock.
Its fifty aluminium platters spun at 1,200 revolutions per minute, and a single arm moved up and down the stack to reach them, which earned the machine the nickname the baloney slicer.
Then and now
| IBM 350 (1956) | iPhone (2026) | |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity | 3.75 MB | 128 GB to 1 TB |
| Weight | over 1 ton | about 200 grams, phone included |
| What fits | about one modern photo | tens of thousands of photos and hours of 4K video |
Capacity has grown by a factor of hundreds of thousands. The habit that came with it is to keep everything, and that is why a 128 GB phone still runs out.
Why a phone with gigabytes still fills up
Storage grew, and so did the files. A 48 megapixel photo takes four to eight times the space of a 12 megapixel one, ProRAW and 4K video far more. Most camera rolls also hold the same moment many times over: bursts, retakes, near identical sunsets and screenshots kept by accident.
- Look at video first: one minute of 4K at 30 fps is about 170 MB.
- Clear near duplicates: keep the best shot of a series and let the rest go.
- Delete screenshots you no longer need, they add up quietly.
- For heavy photos you want to keep, a compressed copy at full resolution is often a fraction of the size.
